I was on FaceTime with one of my old friends recently and she couldn’t stop talking about how good my face looked. Then she went on to say “I’m the only one in Nigeria that has a smooth face and look like I live abroad”. I was defensive and insisted that I know a lot of people with smooth faces then she suggested I share my face care routine on the blog and that’s what birthed this post. I’ve never been one to use a lot of products on my face; I think probably because I will always forget. Growing up, I tried a couple of acne remover creams but all they did was tone my skin.
Before I get into my routine, I want to warn you not to expect too much. I’m sharing the basic things I do.
Don’t Wear Makeup Everyday
The truth is you don’t need to wear makeup everyday. You can simply do your eyebrows and wear some lipstick to lift your face if you feel it’s necessary. Your face needs to breathe as much as possible and it wouldn’t get to if you wear concealer and foundation every single day. Don’t worry about people wondering if you are sick, after some time, they will get used to your no makeup face.
Don’t Go To Bed With Makeup On
The skin needs to breathe overnight and makeup prevents that. Leaving makeup overnight clogs the pores which may cause blemishes and/or blackheads. Now I’m not sure if my makeup remover Boots Essentials Cucumber Facial Wipes has anything to do with my smooth face but one thing I’m sure of is that since I’ve been wearing makeup, I’ve used only one make up remover. I like the cucumber smell but more importantly, it freshens my face afterwards. For my eye area, I dab some coconut oil on cotton wool to get every residue out. There’s no excuse for not getting all your makeup off properly. It’s also essential to wash your face afterwards, please ladies don’t go to bed without getting it off.
Wash Your Face Properly
A lot of people use any kind of soap on their face. Either because they saw it on TV or at the store or because someone said it works for them. My bathing soap which I talked about here is organic and it doubles as my face mask too. Ensure you wash your face thoroughly but gently at least twice a day and clean your face right after. Also, make exfoliation part of your routine. I exfoliate twice a week and what I discovered is when I use my soap as a mask, it dries up any acne or rash on my face. The morning after, I see changes immediately and that amazing glow the turmeric in it brings. You can also use honey or sea salt to exfoliate.
Drink A lot of Water & Eat Fruits and Vegetables
I’ve mentioned that I drink a lot of water in some of my health posts. The importance of drinking enough water cannot be overemphasized. It’s recommended that you drink at least 8 cups of water a day. Water washes everything in the body down so you can get them out in the toilet. Also, eat fruits that have high water content such as watermelon, cucumber and orange and food rich in fiber.
You may not know this but exercising and staying active have positive effects on the skin. By increasing blood flow, exercise helps nourish skin cells and keep them vital. Endeavor to exercise regularly. Running, jogging and yoga will give your body the necessary blood circulation, and also accelerate the cleansing process of your entire body. You will notice a glow on your face after working out. I especially like my sweatface after a good burnout becuae I’m always happy to see the toxins in my body are running out.
At least once a week or two, I break out. When I do, I wash my face properly at night and apply dusting powder(yeah, you read right). It takes its time, so I do this for two or three nights and my face is back to normal again. I really don’t know where the rashes storm from but they always attack me. I think it’s hard to escape rashes if you live in Nigeria. Even if you are lucky to have power 24/7, the humidity will still bring the rashes in full force.
Yes!!!! the condition of your hair affects your skin especially your face. If you don’t believe me, leave a weave in for too long or don’t wash your hair in a month. Please don’t!!! Taking care of your body includes your hair too. Notice how your face glows when you get a new do or a good wash???
Thanks for reading.
