I ate one cucumber a day for thirty days and here’s why.
In the month of June, I was blessed with bad forehead acne. It got worse in July, and by August, I purchased quite a number of skincare products and hopped on a skincare routine. However, the acne was stubborn and marked their territory on my face. I took my ordeal to my Instagram story hoping someone would have a solution to my dilemma. I got a few recommendations including visiting a dermatologist, new range of skincare, using only cold water to wash my face, wiping my face only with a paper towel, and incorporating cucumber and watermelon in my diet.
Out of all these recommendations, upping my cucumber intake seemed exciting and easier to accomplish. Since watermelon is a regular fruit in my diet, I decided to focus on cucumber instead. The next day, I went to the store to buy a lot of cucumbers and turned this to a whole thirty days challenge.
On the first day, which was the 2nd of September, I ate a whole cucumber, when it was time to eat. I’ve been fasting intermittently for over three years now. I made a short video of me eating my cucumber and shared it on my Instagram story. I did this every day for the first week and the comments were mostly funny while some were encouraging. By the end of the week, I had inspired a few of my followers to join me but I noticed no changes on my face.
By the second week, I had done some research on cucumber and its benefits. I juiced my daily cucumber with a bit of lime juice every day. I tasted off initially but cucumber has an acquired taste so it got easier as the days went by. I continued sharing my daily cucumber intake on my Instagram stories. I also had to explain to many people that I was still eating my regular meals and not only cucumbers.
By the third week, besides the improvement in my bowel system and my glowing skin, my stubborn acne was still present. I was sad but I like to finish everything I start so I kept on with it. I also got a bit bored so I incorporated my daily cucumber into my diet in different ways. Sometimes, I ate it whole. Other times, I chopped it in a bowl or juiced it. Towards the end of the week, I stumbled on an article that said cucumber works better for skincare when it’s applied directly on the skin. So what the hell had I been doing for three good weeks?
By the fourth week, I reluctantly ate my daily cucumber and whenever I juiced it, I would apply some on my face and wash it off after five minutes. To be honest, I’m certain my 30 days cucumber cleanse didn’t particularly get rid of my acne but I know it did some amazing things for my body and skin.
Did you know that cucumbers are 95% water and are rich in vitamin A, B1, B2, B5, B6, C, D, K, Calcium, Magnesium and Potassium? Some of the amazing benefits of cucumber include;
- Promoting/Aiding Hydration
- Aiding Weight Loss
- Aiding Digestion
- Flushing out toxins
- Glowing skin
I can testify to these five benefits because I experienced them all. My skin glowed, I never felt dehydrated and there was a significant increase in my bowel movements. Some other benefits of cucumbers include; hair growth, pain relief, relieving bad breath and reduction of cholesterol amongst others.
Guess who still consumes cucumbers almost every day even though her 30 days cucumber cleanse is over? Me! Cucumber is such an easy fruit to add to your diet and I hate that I didn’t pay it the attention it deserves until now. Oh and in case you need an update on my acne battle, as I typed this, I don’t have any active acne on my face.
On the 1st of October, I went on a products break and continued eating healthy and drinking lots of water. Of course, I was consuming cucumbers too but not everyday. Two weeks later, my acne dried up. My breakouts were definitely hormonal because I don’t understand how they all vanished. Though the acne is gone, I’m battling with the spots they left behind till now.
Are you going to try a thirty days cucumber cleanse?
