The Power of NO

The Power of NO

When was the last time you said NO?

NO, as short and as simple as the word is, is one of the most powerful words to use. At a young age, we are taught to say “YES” when we agree with something and “NO” when we don’t. Yet, we often put ourselves in situations we don’t want to be in just because we do not want to say no. We do things we don’t want to do, to avoid saying no. We say yes when we really mean to say no.

Perhaps we say “YES” because of how the other person/party may feel or so as not to hurt other people’s feelings or because we do not want to miss out. By saying “NO” it means that you are content and do not need that particular add-on in your life. Everything is not for you and you don’t have to be involved in everything.

“It’s only by saying “NO” that you can concentrate on things that are really important.” – Steve Jobs

Sometimes, you just have to say “NO” and that is okay. Saying “NO” does not mean you are selfish or inconsiderate. It also does not mean you are wicked or you don’t care. It means you can’t/don’t want to do that thing at that particular time. When you find yourself in a situation where yes doesn’t come naturally to you, express yourself freely and make the other party see why. It’s important to stand your ground and always do what you want to. Do not lie and do not over-explain yourself. Also, remember that they may not understand your reason and that is okay.

This does not mean you shouldn’t say “YES” when it’s something you want, it only means that you should remember that “NO”, is always an option. This is because you have the power over how you choose to spend your time and what you choose to do.

You can be a good person with a kind heart and still say “NO”.

It’s okay to cancel an appointment or change your mind.

It’s okay not to agree.

It’s okay to speak up.

It’s okay to say no.

Remember that peace is up to you and saying “NO” protects your peace. Practice saying NO this week and note down your observations.

Thanks for reading.

  3. I rarely say no as I always feel bad, even if it’s the right answer. However, this post has made me realise the power of saying no and being comfortable with my decision.
    Thank you for this 🙂

    Thanks for this hun🙌🙌🙌👏👏👏👏👏

  6. I agree, it’s important not to feel pressured into doing things we don’t want to but at the same time there are definitely times where saying yes can also be good getting us out of our comfort zones and experiencing new things. Obviously not if we really don’t feel it’s right or we’re not comfortable, however once in a while it’s great to take risks!

I just finished a book. “The act of saying NO”. We need to stop feeling bad over that response “No”. Just as we have Good and Bad, we have Yes and No. if you are not comfortable then just say NO. I’m still learning though

    1. I’m still learning too. Sounds like I need to get my hands on that book. Thanks for contributing ❤️
