Maya Angelou was a woman of many words. She was an American poet, memoirist, and civil rights activist. She is a Queen I stan and respect, and she’s one of my many inspirations.
She was raped at a tender age and didn’t speak for five years because she felt responsible for the murder of her rapist. Though she had a tough childhood, she persevered and became a household name and winner of over 50 awards.
Maya Angelou was the second poet in history to read a poem at a presidential inauguration. She won three Grammy Awards for Best Spoken Word Album and The Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2010.
Her life’s work is truly remarkable. If you search hard, you will find over 500 quotes by Maya Angelou. She said a lot, and her words still ring true today.
I shared 12 of her quotes related to self-empowerment below because I believe we can all do with encouragement. I categorized the quotes into four sections;
CHALLENGING YOURSELF (TO BE/DO MORE)
“If you are always trying to be normal you will never know how amazing you can be.”
“Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.”
“Each of us has that right, that possibility, to invent ourselves daily. If a person does not invent herself, she will be invented. So, to be bodacious enough to invent ourselves is wise.”
DOING WHAT YOU LOVE
“You can only become truly accomplished at something you love. Don’t make money your goal. Instead, pursue the things you love doing, and then do them so well that people can’t take their eyes off you.”
“Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.”
“Whatever you want to do, if you want to be great at it, you have to love it and be able to make sacrifices for it.”
SELF LOVE
“You alone are enough. You have nothing to prove to anyone.”
“If I am not good to myself, how can I expect anyone else to be good to me?”
“Your crown has been bought and paid for. Put it on your head and wear it.”
PERSEVERANCE (NOT GIVING UP)
“You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated”
“You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them.”
“No matter what happens, or how bad it seems today, life does go on, and it will be better tomorrow.”
